Balsam Lumber from Our Smithers Sawmill

Balsam is our species. We mill dry balsam fir, the timber larger mills walk past, into squared cants and rough-cut boards. It is the wood our whole operation is built around.

Why balsam, and why dry

Balsam fir that has dried in the bush, sometimes after a burn, is no longer a candidate for a larger mill. That is exactly the wood we want. We take it, square it, and give it a second life as solid, usable timber.

We mill dry balsam: the logs left burnt or behind in the bush that larger mills will not take. Every log leaves the yard as squared cants for finished lumber or as chips bound for a local pellet plant, so nothing is wasted.

How we cut balsam

  • Cants in seven cross-sections from 4x4 to 12x12, lengths 8 to 20 ft.
  • Two-inch rough-cut boards in random widths and lengths.
  • Chips from everything that does not square into a cant.

Common questions

Good to know.

Do you specialize in balsam?

Yes. Dry balsam fir is our core species. We built the mill around milling the balsam larger operations will not take.

What can balsam be used for?

Our balsam cants go to a Langley partner for remanufacturing into finished lumber. Our rough boards suit fencing, barns, and outbuildings.

Is balsam structurally sound after drying?

The dry balsam we mill is squared and graded for transport. For specific structural uses, talk to us about grade and we will be straight with you.
